The Office of Emergency Management is charged with the responsibility to help the Borough of Chatham prepare for, respond to, and help recover from disasters. Disasters may be of natural origin or man made. The most common natural events are winter and tropical storms. Their impact may range from mild to devastating. Disasters may occur at any time or place. In the event of a major event the local Office of Emergency Management serves as the conduit between Borough and the State and Federal agencies.

The Emergency Management Coordinator is responsible for the coordinating of all Borough responses to disasters and assisting with obtaining required emergency resources. To help with the planning, preparation, and testing of emergency plans the Borough has a Local Emergency Planning Council, (LEPC). The LEPC consists of representatives from the Borough Council, Police Department, Fire Department, Emergency Squad, Department of Public Works, Borough Administrator, Superintendent of the School Distinct, Construction Department, a representative from the local newspaper, a representative from local businesses and
volunteers.

The Borough’s Emergency Operating Plan is always a work in progress. The plan in constantly being reviewed, tested and revised. Every four years the New Jersey State Police, Office of Emergency Management, reviews and approves our plan. The plan was last reviewed and approved by the State in December 2003.
