Dog Waste Bags - Please do not flush in the toilet!
The Chatham Borough Department of Public Works is asking residents not to flush dog waste bags down their toilets, even if the bag is labeled “flushable.”
Dog waste bags can cause serious problems for both your home's plumbing and the Borough's sewer system. Unlike toilet paper, these bags do not break down quickly enough in the wastewater system. They can become caught in sewer pipes, pumps, and other equipment, potentially causing blockages, backups, and costly repairs.
Dog waste itself can also contribute to problems in the sewer system. Toilets and sewer systems are designed primarily for human waste and toilet paper. Items such as dog waste bags, wipes, paper towels, tissues, and other non-toilet-paper products should be placed in the trash.
Please remember:
🗑️ Bag it — and put it in the trash.
🚽 Do not flush dog waste bags, even if they say “flushable.”
💧 Help protect your home's plumbing and the Borough's sewer system.
A few seconds of convenience can lead to a sewer blockage or backup that is much more costly and difficult to correct.
Thank you for helping Chatham Borough keep our sewer system operating properly!
