Mulch Site Hours of Operation and Rules

Mulch Site 

Mulch site opens March 6, 1-4 Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 12-4. **There will be one brush collection on Monday March 18th. Be sure the brush to be collected is out the night before to ensure pick up.

The Chatham Borough mulch site is located on Duchamp Place and is open to residents on Saturdays from 12:00pm to 4pm and on Wednesdays from 1pm to 4pm. Please note: Duchamp Place and Elmwood Avenue are one-way streets heading south on school days and cannot be used to access the mulch area. Please use Center Avenue to Milton Avenue to Duchamp Place to access the mulch site when school is in session. Please watch for children.

Permits are required to access the mulch site and are issued only to residents.

A permit valid for the 2024 season may be obtained upon your first visit to the mulch site. Department of Works personnel will permanently attach the 2024 permit to your vehicle. No one will be admitted without a current permit.

ACCEPTABLE YARD WASTE: The following items may be disposed of at the site in accordance with NJDEP regulations: leaves, hedge clippings, tree limbs up to 4" in diameter. Grass may be disposed of but must be separated from all other yard waste. Plastic bags or containers must be removed from the site. Failure to comply may result in the closing of the area.

UNACCEPTABLE YARD WASTE: The following items may not be disposed of at the site: stumps, concrete, building materials, old fence materials, limbs in excess of 4" in diameter, lumber, landscape ties, lawn furniture, metal items. Please dispose of these type items in a 32-gallon can, or in green bags, an as part of Bulk Waste Collection. PLEASE DO NOT PLACE YARD WASTE IN THE STREET.

WOOD CHIPS and PROCESSED MULCH is available at the mulch site to all Borough residents at no charge! Residents who would like a large quantity deliveried to theIr home may schedule a $30 or $50 per load delivery. Please call the Department of Public Works at 973-635-5242 for more information and to make arrangements.

LEAF COLLECTION

The Department of Public Works will be collecting leaves at the curb weekly throughout the borough using the vacuum method from October 21st through December 2nd.   Please do not place leaves at the curb after Sunday November 26th. Once the vacuum crews have passed your house they will not return for the season.

In accordance with Borough Ordinance, PLEASE DO NOT PLACE LEAVES IN THE STREET! Leaves should be placed above the curb.

The mulch site will be open for residents and their landscapers Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm. (closed for lunch break from 11:45am to 1:00 pm)

Saturday Mulch Hours: 12pm to 4pm
Hours for Wednesday November 28, 2024 (day before Thanksgiving): 8am - 12pm
Closed November 28th & 29th (Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving)
Last Saturday open December 7, 2024: 12pm - 4pm

Residents should instruct their landscaper to place leaves above the curb in accordance. Landscapers may also contact the Department of Public Works at 973-635-5242 to make arrangements to bring leaves directly to the mulch site FREE OF CHARGE.

BAGGED LEAF COLLECTION will take place on two days in mid-December. Tuesday, December 10th and Tuesday, December 17th, and December 24th. DPW will pick up leaf bags placed at curbside. Residents are responsible for purchasing paper bags. Plastic bags will not be collected.

Monthly Bulk Pickup Collection:

The Borough provides one bulk pickup collection for each collection route. Please check the CALENDAR for scheduled dates.

Acceptable Bulk Pickup Items Include:

Household appliances (must have freon removed), furniture, carpeting, luggage, and other oversized items too big to fit in your can for a garbage pickup.

One 32-gallon garbage CAN of rubbish may be placed at the curb for pickup. Rubbish is defined as items such as shoes, baskets, flower pots, etc.

Rubbish placed in black garbage bags will NOT be collected. 

Unacceptable Bulk Pickup Items:

Recyclables, hazardous waste, medical waste, car parts, tires, concrete, large amounts of wood or pieces in excess of 5 feet by 2 feet in size, construction debris, cement blocks, windows.

 Medication:

Chatham Borough Residents are encouraged to safely dispose of their expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs in the “MedReturn” boxes available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the following locations:
