Why Fishawack?
Fishawack was the Lenni Lenape Indian name for the Passaic River and Chatham was located at the narrowest part making it the “Crossing of the Fishawack in the Valley of the Great Watchung”, according to John T. Cunningham’s book, “Chatham at the Crossing of the Fishawack”. Each year the tribes forded the river in Chatham en route to their summer “get-away” at the Jersey shore where they spent the summer in warmer climates and eating all the fish they could catch.
The Fishawack Festival will take place in downtown Chatham on Saturday, June 8th from 10am to 4pm for vendors, and the outdoor pub will be open from 12pm to 6pm. The festival will be held at Fairmount Ave, Reasoner Park, Railroad Plaza South, and Lum Field. The activities will include an appearance by George Washington and the Fife and Drum Corp. to celebrate the Chatham Historical Society’s 100th Anniversary at noon. There will be Kids’ Zone rides and games on Lum Field, and a dunk tank sponsored by Chatham Emergency Squad. Live music by the Chatham Community Band, celebrating 40 years, will begin at 11am at the Gazebo. Crafters, food vendors, and art exhibits will be located at Railroad Plaza South and along Fairmount Avenue for everyone to enjoy.
