The Chatham Chiliad outdoor exercise group has several adventures planned for September and October. Chatham Chiliad activities build community for active adults as they pivot into retirement by providing opportunities that pair physical activities with socializing with neighbors. Chatham Chiliad events are free and open to all residents of the Chathams aged 60+. Participants pay for their own transportation and refreshments. Cross Estate Gardens
Chatham Chiliad will host a walk at the Cross Estate Gardens at Jockey Hollow on Thursday, September 5th (rain date Tuesday, September 10th), This adventure will be a garden stroll rather than a hike, and will be at a social pace. Cross Estate Gardens includes both formal and native gardens, as well as a wisteria-covered pergola and a mountain laurel allee. Participants will meet at the parking area for the Cross Estate Gardens at 61 Jockey Hollow Road, Bernardsville, NJ at 9:30 a.m. There is no entrance fee nor parking fee.
Hartshorn Arboretum
On Tuesday, September 17th (rain date Thursday, September 19th), Chatham Chiliad will explore the Hartshorn Arboretum in Short Hills. The Arboretum has several trails traversing the sloped lot, including a trail that passes a natural amphitheater created by glaciers. The arboretum boasts wildflowers, wildlife, and over forty species of trees. The arboretum does not have a parking lot; parking is permitted in three designated areas on the same side of the residential street as the Hartshorn Arboretum. Join us in front of the entrance at 324 Forest Drive South, Short Hills, NJ, at 9:30 a.m. There is free admission, although donations are welcome.
Reeves-Reed Arboretum
On Tuesday, October 1st (rain date Thursday, October 3rd), Chatham Chiliad will visit Reeves-Reed Arboretum at 165 Hobart Avenue, Summit, NJ. The Reeves-Reed arboretum includes both historical gardens that maintain their original appearance and contemporary gardens that offer both traditional perennial borders and bold new plantings. We will also explore a portion of the woodland trails. Those interested in viewing the exhibit of Susan Darwin’s New Jersey paintings in the Wisner House will be able to do so. Meet at the parking lot at 9:30 a.m. There is free admission, although donations are welcome.
Governors Island
In this big adventure on Tuesday, October 15th (rain date Thursday, October 17th), Chatham Chiliad will walk the 2.1 mile paved loop trail around the circumference of Governors Island. From Governors Island, we will have great views of the Statue of Liberty, Freedom Tower, and the NYC skyline. We will meet at the Chatham Train Station at 9:30 a.m. for the train to Hoboken and the ferry to downtown Manhattan. We will walk to the Battery Maritime Building and take the NYC ferry to Governors Island. We will stop for a casual lunch, either on the island or in downtown NYC. The total transportation cost (train and ferries) is about $36 for those aged 62-64 and $26 for those aged 65+.
